I’ve put up this banner in support of the call for the release of Dr Basmullah who was jailed for not registering his clinic in accordance with the PHSFA.

Dr Basmullah Yusom, a family practitioner, is the first victim of this legislation. He was sentenced despite not having legal counsel representing him, despite pleading for leniency (he had wanted to sell the clinic anyway and is in financial trouble) and as he could not pay the hefty RM 120,000 fine, he is now in Kajang prison.

The ex-Health Minister had promised that the Act would be used only against Bogus doctors and Bogus clinics. The doctors were told, "you good guys don't have to worry. we will go after the bad guys ". Yet, we now see that legitimate licensed APC holding medical practitioners are now targeted.

Lulu's Concerned About What's Happening In Schools

It's shocking to read about the things that are happening in schools today.

This school, and trust Lulu, it's not the only one, "disqualified" kids who were wearing shorts from winning with flimsy excuses such as failing to get the ribbons at the designated spots and that the numbers pinned on the shirts were torn.
This school pula, insisted that the children shave off their moustaches and beards and used harsh words when they tried to explain. The reason behind their un-shavenness was that they had taken a Thaipusam vow, and at least one of their parents had written in to the school informing them of their vow and the date when they would shave it off.
And we have here a case of kids who do not attend religious class [and you know la, in schools, which religion is allowed to hold "religious class"] who were asked to wash the toilet. Nothing bad/evil in washing school toilets, Lulu has had a fair share, but making it non-muhibbah? that's not right...

KJ John, who has a regular column in Malaysiakini also had problems with the zealots in his son's school.
He writes,

"The second case was when a new Ustaz in my son’s primary school insisted that all Primary 6 prefects wear long pants; not one teacher stood up to ask why or challenged this arbitrary decision. Therefore, when I went in to write a complaint, the non-Malay deputy principal was truly appreciative of my “public protest” as he could use “my parent complaint” to raise and address this issue with the principal regarding the “new policy” which was not discussed by the teachers, but merely implemented by the new Ustaz.
The third instance was when I was on a PIBG committee at my son’s school when we heard that the principal had issued a verbal directive to all non-Muslim clubs and societies to “refrain from undertaking their religious activities within the school compound.” At the next PIBG committee meeting, I enquired of the principal where and why there was such a policy. She replied that it was a directive from the PPD or the Pegawai Pendidikan Daerah. I asked for a copy of the written directive, as I knew the implications of such a directive. The principal confirmed that it was an unwritten one. I advised her against following such “non-policies” and requested for her to rescind the policy before the annual PIGB meeting. She did not and the matter was raised at the next PIBG meeting and was resolved when another senior ex-government servant and a Malay parent argued that it was against the Federal Constitution."

If you are a parent, Lulu hopes that you are sensitive and aware of what's happening in your children's school. Also, some children may choose to abide and suffer in silence. Take an active role in your children's school. Also, remember that right for your school Christian, Buddhist and Hindu activities are given in the Federal Constitution. Challenge your school principal if he does not allow it. When/If you are not sure if they are right or wrong, use your schooldays as the benchmark.
Join the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA/PIBG). You cannot afford to let zealots narrow your children's mind and perspective of life.

Lulu's Wondering If These 130,000 ex-"Hardcore Poor" Are Feeling Any Richer Today

The PM announced that the percentage of hardcore poor in the country has decreased to 0.7% last year from 1.2% in 2004, according to initial statistics from the Economic Planning Unit's household income survey last year.

today, it costs RM2.89.

Taking the national average of RM691 poverty level income,
in 07, the family could have bought 267 packs of 5pack Maggi Mee.
today, in this "inflation is only 1.9%" nation of ours, the same family can buy only 239 packs with the same amount of money.

When Lulu read this morning that a sale of the publisher is in the works.

Market sources said the asking price – RM200mil – for a controlling stake in one of the main English publications in the country might be a little steep at the moment but said this was just the start of negotiations.
It was believed the consolidation of the Nexnews stake would give Tan better bargaining power when negotiating a sale of the publication to new owners.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 (Bernama) -- The Information Ministry has set up an Accurate Information Reference Centre (Sahih) which will begin operations from Feb 1 to tackle the dissemination of false information, particularly in view of the coming general election, said its minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin.
He said the setting up of Sahih could ensure that only accurate and correct information were conveyed to the people using the existing technology.
"The availability of speedy technology has democratised information to the extent that the community or anyone could become a source of information and disseminate them speedily using the internet, special messaging service (SMS) and so on.
"These include false information which are purposely exploited by irresponsible groups for certain objectives," he said at a press conference at Angkasapuri, here Thursday.
He said the Sahih centre would disseminate the information through the hotline, e-mail and SMS DAPAT, sending them by `broadcast', through the `cell broadcast' and correct information subscription.
Using the hotline, e-mail and SMS DAPAT mechanisms, the public could contact the Sahih Centre via telephone number 03-22843114 (operating during office hours and 24 hours when Parliament is dissolved), facsimile 03-22822979, e-mail using the address sahih@kempen.gov.my and SMS at the address SAHIH_mesej (and send to) DAPAT (32728).

On Saturday night, at a Ponggal Festival (Tamil New Year) event at Bukit Bintang, the PM pleadged to the Indian community yesterday that he would consider declaring Thaipusam a national holiday.
“I have to hold a meeting before a decision can be made. I promise you, I’ll consider it,”

And then on Sunday evening, he announces to a crowd of "20,000" that he had considered the request by the MIC to declare Thaipusam a public holiday, "we" discussed this matter and decided to let it be a holiday because "would be traffic jams everywhere in Kuala Lumpur ".

a. Hold a meeting on Sunday morning?
if he did, then Lulu doubts if it were a meeting with BN component leaders or Cabinet ministers as OKT was busy in Sg Way trying to promote his golden girl, the soon to be Senator CMF.

b. Lie on Saturday night that he will hold a meeting on Sunday morning when the matter had already been decided
Zorro's Hantu had already informed him that Hindraf has subtly hinted to Hantu that THAIPUSAM WILL BE DECLARED A NATIONAL HOLIDAY before 23rd January.

One of Haris's readers wrote an account of the mammoth syncophant gathering that wasn't. Lulu, like Marina, was not amused to see the Star publish a picture of 'Sekretariat Bertindak Anak Muda Malaysia' carrying placards voicing out their surprise on Mahathir's forgetfulness
when they had not/could not publish the picture of that same group giving a present to the current Prime Minister.
Not that Lulu's a fan of DrM, but the Star's double standards are pathetic. At least Malaysiakini and bloggers have been consistent, featuring both the events organised by the group.

It's no secret that the current PM loves people buttering up to him and singing high praises of him.
It makes Lulu wonder if he ever wonders what how much "respect" his bodek-ers will show him when he's no longer PM.

this past week has been a bliss for Lulu. Lulu's done with her work and can leave the office on time.

The route Lulu takes home passes a playground. There are children playing there, but all boys. No girls. Their mummies are probably keeping them indoors after what happened to Nurin, Sharlinie and 5 other little girls.

It really saddens Lulu that the little girls dare not come out to play.

Lulu hopes that our “What’s going on? Why is it so high?” Internal Security Minister will actually do something.
Maybe he should start looking at where our policemen are placed. With one third of the force in pengurusan, Lulu thinks we do have cops whom we can spare for patrolling.

How true is that statement? Let's find out.

The following is the amount of total subsidies paid by the Government every year. Data taken from http://www.bnm.gov.my/files/publication/msb/2007/11/pdf/6.3.pdf

Notice that the total subsidies have increased 2.75 times since 2002.

But bear in mind that the data above did not specify that it's only for petroleum subsidies. This means that other subsidies are also included in those figures.

Next, let's find out how much is the Govt's revenue from petroluem taxes & duties, dividend from Petronas and gas & petroleum royalties. Data below taken from http://www.treasury.gov.my/view.php?ch=24&pg=183&ac=1443&fname=attachment&dbIndex=0
Notice that total revenues have increased 2.94 times since 2002.

Next, let's compare the above tables and find out the net figures for each year to see if the Govt is better off or worse off from the increase in global oil prices.
WoW! The net figure has increased almost 3 times since 2002!

Means that the Govt benefitted from the increase in global oil prices. It was a RM35bil windfall in 2006! And even after deducting the RM10.1bil subsidies for that year!

Means that there is actually some leeway to reduce oil prices without bankrupting the country by using that 'windfall', if we were to look at the situation from this perspective.

Any idea where that 'windfall' every year is being utilised for? Is it being saved for the future, used to pay our debts or utilised for development purposes? In other chapters, we'll explore that.

With elections coming up, the low lifes on "the other side" have organised nasty attacks on Teresa Kok in the press painting her as unapproachable and uncaring. In the case of 4 1/2 mile Old Klang Road and this Salak South New Village case, we see people holding placards that criticise her, and these criticism has been featured by the press.

As we approach the coming general elections, more and more of this sort of low blows and blatant lies will pop out.
In the previous general elections, the Gerakan led Penang launched nasty and untruthful accusations on DAP and the Islamic state. They successfully cast fear on the voters who voted for Gerakan. It is obvious that Gerakan is playing those tricks again if you've read the papers these past two days.

Discern what you read.
Also, if you are from Lulu's generation, talk to your parents about these things. For most of them, their source of news comes from the mainstream media and the television. For example, the Chinese news, be it TV2, NTV7 or TV8 portions a chunk of their new time glorifying the MCA. Lulu Wondering About The Point Of Having Senators and Dewan Negara

Lulu was trying to recall why we have a Dewan Negara in this country.
The Dewan Negara reviews legislation that has been passed by the Dewan Rakyat.
They both meet at the Houses of Parliament.
Both houses must pass a bill before it can be sent to the King for royal assent.
BUT The Dewan Negara may not formally reject bills; it is only allowed to delay their passage by one month, or up to a year under certain circumstances.
In other words, no matter how much the members of the Dewan Negara would object to a bill, the bill can bypass their approval.
Doesn't sound like they're of much use, yah?

As long as there is a Dewan Negara in Malaysia, she has a place to seek political refuge. She [and her boss] need not give up her dreams and aspirations.

Lulu Hates It When The Rich And Narrow Minded Speak

Lulu does not mind the rich. Wouldn't even mind marrying one, but when the rich and narrow-minded speaks, it gets Lulu kinda upset.

Latest rich and narrow-minded to speak is our PM's over privileged son-in-law.

Parents have been advised not to “privatise” the duty of raising their children to third parties as the move will result in lack of attention and the kids easily falling prey to social ills.

Does Khairy not know that, especially in the Klang Valley, it is very difficult to survive on a single income? Parents have to make the difficult choice of sending their children to the baby sitter, leaving them with the maid or subcontracting the task to the grandparents.

Then again, how would Khairy know considering that neither he [his father in law did tell us that nasty people (was it DrM?) caused his son-in-law to menganggur] nor his wife work.

Life for common folks like us is so, so different compared to his idealistic and idle-istic one.

And he doesn't stop there.

“The government has done a lot for education (in this country). Can’t they afford to contribute a sum to the school to help the parent-teacher associations?” he asked.

'o sweet Khairy, the answer to your question is there are a lot of parents who can't afford it. Does he not know how much the "a sum to the school" comes up to? Can you imagine what a nightmare it is for parents with 5 school children when the school term starts?

Lulu would think that education is the government's responsibility. There is no cop-out on that.

How would he know? His father was in the foreign mission, and his education was paid as part of the job package. They never had to worry about "trivial" matters like these.

When the PM took over office in Oct03, the price of oil was about touching 40usd. It is believed that the PM inherited a "poor nation" as most of its coffers were emptied out by the cronies of the outgoing PM.
Hence the "cancel wasteful projects" and the austerity drive.

But since then, the price of oil has more than doubled. Price of oil touched the 100usd level this week,
the PM and his cronies see a lot of opportunities.
Hence the many corridors which, as Lulu has said, leads to u-know-where. There goes the "no wasteful projects". Bye-bye to austerity drives. Lets all [as us our exclusive gang, not all Malaysians] go for prosperity drives.

The question still remains,
Say, if our oil well runs dry, where are we going to find the money to build roads, hospitals and other amenities?

They only have to look at Cyberjaya to see that the "build first, the investors will come" "hope" does not work.
Look at Bangalore. They got the people right first. There was demand for their skill set, and development naturally followed.
Why won't the government get their act correct, invest in their people and give quality education to the next generation? That we raise up workers with genuine qualifications instead of graduates with just a piece of paper but no quality?

What Najib didn't tell the people of Sabah was that the roads, hospitals and other amenities are going their direction but to the corridors in the Peninsula - the Iskandar Development Region covering southern Johor, the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) and the Northern Corridor Economic Region covering Perlis, Kedah, Penang and northern Perak.

We don't know if all/any of these corridors will lead to development and the betterment of Malaysians, but we rest assure that they all lead to the UMNO connected contractors.

Common people like us would have to continue to plead for hospitals and other amenities. Every 4,5 years, we get lucky and have some things approved.
btw, roads are given in the Klang Valley cos the government sells them to toll concessionaires.

Major op to seize sex DVDs
MUAR: Police in Batu Pahat and here will launch a massive operation to nab those involved in distribution and in possession of the sex DVDs of Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.
Muar police chief Asst Comm Mohammad Nasir Ramli said the operation would include door-to-door searches of residents suspected to be in possession of the banned material.
He said it was an offence to possess and distribute copies of the DVDs and that offenders would be charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code, which carries a three-year jail term or fine or both

It's either a very stupid scare tactic or a very stupid exercise or both.

The police, by the looks of it, haave been given the license to raid all homes in Batu Pahat.
The DVDs were left all over town, so, how do you identify those suspected in possession of the dvd?
DVDs are small and thin, and can be hidden anywhere in the house. And the men who hide them are quite experienced hide-ers, having gained many years of experience in hiding them from the wife and children.
And it's not like the DVD bears labels like "Chua Soi Lek Sex DVD" or "DVD Pemimpin Politik Yang Terlampau" or anything like that. One could stuff them in between a stack of family holiday DVD collection, or your favourite Teresa Teng collection, and the police would have to, if they were seriously doing their job, play each and every cd.

Lulu would like to write it off as a scare tactic, but having seen the police bear their ugly horns and nasty hand in imposing roadblocks into KL to incur the public's wrath, Lulu would not put it pass the police to victimise selected candidates and raiding their homes.

And if the police wants to show consistensty, they should also visit the TV stations highlighted in the earlier post.
Lulu also wonders if OKT has surrendered his copy or not. OKT is a fair and just person and would not have believed the rumours of a sex DVD featuring one of his men until he saw it for himself. Lulu hopes he remembers to surrender his cos if he gets caught with it, he risks a three-year jail term or fine or both, and this would cause him to lose his seat and make him ineligible to stand for elections for 5 years.
Lulu's sure we do not want OKT to go down this way.

Health Minister Dr Chua Soi Lek today openly admitted that he was the person featured in a video depicting a man having sex with a woman purportedly in a hotel room.
However, he said that he will not resign as health minister but will instead let Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi decide on his fate.

the "what two consenting adults do in private" does not hold water for Lulu as this consenting adult is supposed to be a public figure and a role model for children.

And those who have no problems with what two consenting adults do in private should also have no problems if Chua's replacement indulges in what two consenting men (or women for that matter) do in private.

Lulu Thought There Are Strict Laws On Possession Of Pornography In Malaysia

but looking at the news on TV just now, they were featuring the Chua Soi Lek confession with adegan-adegan video seks ahli politik yang terlampau running on the side.

The image of Chua's "personal friend" was blurred out. Unless the TV stations received edited copies of the video, looks like they're naughty-naughty too, being in possession of pornography material.

Batu Pahat district chief Asst Comm Ibrahim Mohd Aris had already warned that anyone found in possession of the DVDs or caught distributing copies of them could be charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code and sentenced to three years' jail or fined, or both.

Lulu guesses that BU, Shah Alam and Pantai would be beyond Asst Comm Ibrahim Mohd Aris jurisdiction. Maybe those hardworking policemen who like to keep our city safe by conducting roadblocks would like to pay a visit to RTM, TV3, NTV7 and TV8.

Lulu Wants To Do A Research On How Much You Are Paying Now That School Fees Have Been Abolished

RPK posted on Malaysia Today a letter from Dr Mohamed Rafick Khan bin Abdul Rahman revealing exactly what it means when our honourable and esteemed Prime Minister says that school fees has been abolished.
Amongst it are

• Only the special Fees has been removed i.e. RM 4.50 for primary school and RM 9.00 for secondary schools
• They have introduce new package charges under Co Curricular activities which is between RM2.00 to RM 5.00. It is quite obvious that most school will adopt the middle package which is RM 3.00
• They also increase the "charges of Kertas Ujian Dalaman" from RM 5.00 to between RM 6 to RM8. Again I believe most schools will go for the middle package which is RM8.00
• School sports day which was not charge previously is now being charge between RM6- RM10 which again I believe most schools will charge RM8.00
• MSSM Fees is now increased from RM 0.50 to RM 2.00

It's kinda disgusting how the government
1. hoodwinks the rakyat on no more school fees.
Lulu can still recall how they rakyat applauded the move, not knowing that their savings was a mere RM4.50 / RM9.00.
2. that the government isnt allocating enough for schools [looks like it's a national issue, not just the national type schools and semi-government schools] that the schools have to charge these fees to cover the expenses.

Che Jaafar Che Man who blogs at Kuala Lumpur Is Home laments about having to pay RM 255.20 when he registered his daughter to school yesterday.
The parents at usj.com.my are also submitting in how much they have to pay.

Lulu Hates It When The MCA fellas Grovel And Make Such A Big Deal Over Meagre Allocations To The Chinese Schools

dont you hate it when these running dogs make it like it's the best-est, kindest, benovelent-est and generous-est act of the government to allocate them a paltry sum of money?

Just look at them

"A GREAT START TO 2008 FOR CHINESE SCHOOLS"
The Star calls it "a substantial amount", not daring to state exactly how much.

For crying out loud, it's only RM10million. Malaysiakini mentioned it.

“Coming to the end of 2007, we have an RM10 million ‘ang pow’ to celebrate the new year. This is good news for the Chinese community,” he proclaimed before giving the cheques out.

The sleeping PM gave RM22 million to his high school which did not even manage to teach him well enough to pass his statistic paper.
What is RM10million when it is distributed to 57 schools?

Schools in a normal decent government should not have to grovel for money like that. Schools and education should be the responsibility of the government. School principals and the board of governers should not be fretting over how to pay their bills, how to meet the expenses but to take care of the education of those under their charge.
It's not just the national type schools which are affected. Lulu came from a missionary school which only receives partial aid [but plentiful interference] from the government.

Bottomline,
1. something is wrong with our Education Ministry
2. MCA fellas should retain their dignity and not act like kiss-asses having received scraps from a wealthy man.
Neither of them are news to anyone, but it totally disgusts Lulu whenever it happens.
