Footnote taken from The Trouble With Malaysia, a Brian Yap essay from the book New Malaysian Essays 1
The 'Malaysia Boleh' slogan came about around the time of the Mahathir administration, which saw the country making its mark globally in various fields.
Cynical Malaysians have since adopted the term, turning it into a sacarstic remark about some of the more outlandish aspects of Malaysian life.
For example, one might say, 'Malaysia Boleh!' after being told that the computer system is down at the Road Transport Department.
The term was paraphrased to illustrate Malaysia's wasteful ways by The Age columnist Michael Brackman Malaysia Bodoh Nov15, 2006.
