So Much Smoke, Lulu's Not Able To See Clearly

Jan 1, 08 4:32pm
Health Minister Dr Chua Soi Lek today openly admitted that he was the person featured in a video depicting a man having sex with a woman purportedly in a hotel room.
However, he said that he will not resign as health minister but will instead let Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi decide on his fate.
"I serve at the pleasure of the prime minister," he said. "I will not allow (other) people to jeopardise or obstruct my duties."
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/76559

24 hours later,
“I am relinquishing my position as health minister, MCA vice-president, Labis MP, Johor MCA liaison chief and Batu Pahat MCA division chief.”
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/76583

What's the smoke Lulu's talking about?
the honourable and respectable OngKaTing says that it’s the prime minister’s prerogative (to pick the Chua's successor from the list he submitted).
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/76581
PM however has said he has left it to MCA to decide on Chua's replacement. MCA was holding its presidential council meeting to discuss Chua’s resignation while the premier was talking to the media.
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/76605
Smoke, smoke, all that smoke, who's bluffing us? They both probably are.
If Lulu were to pick who's the bigger bluff, Lulu would pick the one who also said, “The presidential council regretfully accepts and respects his decision to be accountable for his actions,"

Ooooooo Chua Soi Lek, not only should he have [to quote Khoo Kay Peng] kept his pants zipped up, he should be careful who he turns to when in moments of trouble.
What do you think of the question Uncle Kit posed? Sudden demise of fastest-rising star in political firmament - was Chua Soi Lek victim of double betrayal?
Lulu thinks he was.
Smoke, smoke, all that smoke. We can see that Chua Soi Lek cheated his wife. But who cheated Chua with all this "bad" advise?

btw, Lulu belongs to the camp that believes he needs to resign after being caught with his pants down.
the "what two consenting adults do in private" does not hold water for Lulu as this consenting adult is supposed to be a public figure and a role model for children.
It definetly does not help that he goes around dispensing advise like, "Practise safe sex and be faithful to your partner" here
And those who have no problems with what two consenting adults do in private should also have no problems if Chua's replacement indulges in what two consenting men (or women for that matter) do in private.
For Lulu, morality counts when a person is a public figure, be it a politician or a church leader.

Updated 7:06am
Chua's sorriness is akin to a boy who was caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He does not think his biggest mistake was cheating on his wife but "My biggest mistake was that I stayed in the hotel and in the same room for convenience. Next time, when you stay in a hotel, good luck to you.". Quote from the Sun
Also, Damocles, in a comment in Eli Wong's post, reminds us that his indiscretion had left him vulnerable to all sorts of blackmail.

"Practise safe sex and be faithful to your partner"

Spot on, Lulu! That's exactly where Ah Lek's double speak hypocrisy does not entitle him to the according of Jesus' admonition on to others about throwing the first stone.

As a man he has confessed.
With sympathy, people could forgive but not forget!

If he resigned to keep his "morality" a bit in the Politics
he could have been spare the same as by his family
with some sympathy from some public.
But, he had challenged PM and MCA that is the worst tactic!
To asked more Politicians to stand together
he had put the question mark on a bigger group to the Public!

It is an awful Political show!
Is the wave stopped or just begin?
To whose benefits it will mean?

i've not commented on your blog in a while.. but i read it religiously!

i think that any parent who encourages their child to pick a politician as a role model needs to get their head examined.. there's no such thing as a good politician..

I think it is not a big deal as most if not all men have extra-marital sex, the only things are CSL is a politician and got caught on video........

Chua's biggest mistake that he contiues to make is not being able to identify what really his biggest mistake really was.

It was not going to the same hotel and using the same room. It was cheating on his wife and children. Period.

Rey Ramos commented on the lede, NY times said it quite correctly,

"I beleive the health minister is wrong when he said that, “At the end of the day, it just tells you that honesty sometimes does not pay.” Hello. Wake up. You were being dishonest on your wife by cheating and have to pay the consequences. Telling the truth about cheating is not an example of “honesty.” It is an example of taking responsibility for what you have done and that involves dealing with the repercussions. No one is forcing you to be health minister. By accepting that job you are accepting public scrutiny and holier-than-thou expectations. Don’t like it? Don’t take the job."

Well, well doesn't it sound so much like this,

"If they are not satisfied with our service, then why come to our hospital? They came on Nov 26. According to logic, if you don't have confidence in our doctors, then why come?"

In my opinion, he cheating on his wife is nobody's business but his and his wife and GOD. What has his adultery gotta do with us? I also dont think we should all judge and condemns him. Afterall, all of us are no great saints. Remember what the bible say... "Let the man with no sin be the first to throw the stone"

As for role model?? Come ON!!!! Politicians as role model?? Who are we kidding?? Even parents nowadays cannot be role model.. you expect politicians who must survive the dirty game of politics to be role model?? We got a serious problem here if that is the case.

Yes, admittedly, nobody is perfect and what gained my respect and admiration about CSL was his guts and courage to admit it was him. I personally dont think there is anything to apologise to.. he didnt cheat on me... he is not married to me. We have never seen such integrity or accountability. I think this counts for a lot! And I am sure we will never see any more accountability after this fiasco.

What upsets me most is the way our PM handled this situation. Accepting CSL resignation is to penalise someone for being accountable and the easiest way out to apeace a bunch of hollier than thou idiots who for all we know, maybe screwing anything that walks! GOD!!! If there is a need to accept anybody's resignation, there are plenty out there!! People who authorised purchases of helicopter that cannot fly that cost us so much money that we bleed from our skin, people who approved purchases of simple tools that cost 100 times more than anywhere else in the world.... Our PM didnt put an ounce of consideration of CSL work performance. It is so not professional!

To some, CSL may not have done much as a Minister of Health but hey! can any of us say that we can do better if we are in that position?? If cannot, we better shut up and not whimper.

CSL have made insensitive gaffes at least 3 times as a politician suggesting that he is indeed arrogant. Jimmy Chua did not. So off the cuff, assuming all things being equal, CSL was irritating and he chose to be so.

If he was truly honorable and brave, he should have offered to resign upon admission instead of saying he'll not but leaver it to the Gomen. Some people reads too much into his positive side of the equation.

He was cocky to the end and earns people's dislike:

That sometimes catches up with the person. That he did a good job or not becomes secondary though accredited positively to him in this letter:

http://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/76638
The spirit is willing but flesh weak

"..Many appear to shed crocodile tears for Dr Chua Soi Lek, the fallen health minister, who does not seem remorseful or shamed by his misconduct looking at his media interviews. Asking a persistent female reporter to watch the video with him shows his cockiness, no pun intended…...."

Anonymous,

It is MS.... Ms Pearl...

I am saying Politican is a lousy role model. I didnt say they shouldnt and will not.

As for learning from parents, well, I learnt a lot from my parents. I have learnt to be objective about things for one.

Yup, we are living in a community and yadda, yadda, yadda...BUT we are all equipped with enough sense and maturity to know if we should follow other people's action or not. You mean to tell me you can't? We should also have enough sense not to play judge when we are not holly-molly all arounder ourselves!

We all have our own sets of moral values and no matter what they are, we shouldnt go around forcing it down anyone's throat. But for the sake of arguing, I take this case as an example la, the moral issue here is....adultery. So, he is adulterous to who? YOU ah?? Me ah?? FACT : He is adulterous to his wife! The woman he vow to stay faithful to. So, are you that woman? Am I that woman? I duno about you, but I am not. So, what is it to you and me?? case close la unless you are telling me you very free and like to jaga tepi kain orang!

What moral issue is it to me? The only moral issue between him and me is that he better deliver his work efficiently (while he is in office la) and not do under table, above counter, under the sink money transaction la. I pay tax to pay his salary for him to do his job. So do it efficiently and that to me, is good enough moral! Other than that, I know him from Adam OK!

I suppose there are some basic "requirements" for every job position but I am sure it doesnt go all the way back to whether one has the ability to be adulterous or if one is gay or straight or if one prefer to be vegetarian or not!!!! You mean not ah?? Is that why gays are finding it so hard to secure jobs no matter how good they are? Is that why many of these ppl opt to stand on the street and pull tricks!? Is this a morally correct thing to do?

GOD!! Dont come and moral can be so irrelevant in my type of civilization with me la. If I must say, it is people like you who make the world a lousier place with all your moral mumbo-jumbo!

Lulu, to say that I'm flabbergasted by some of the postings that I found here as well as in other blogs is an understatement!
Many have praised this minister for doing great during his term as minister.
Great? When a poor patient has to appeal for funds to operate on his leg at a government hospital? Great? When medicines that are effective but are more costly are denied to poor patients?
Great? When the waiting time for a appointment with a specialists is months? Great when the barest minimum is allocated for medical health? Great? When the National Health Insurance Scheme is taking years to hatch and is unavailable to the public for comments?
Great? YES! great to those who are fools who enjoy being short-changed by the BN government. Great to those who are masochistic.
When will Malaysians wake up and shake off the stupor that envelopes them?

Damocles,

It was far worse before CSL sat on that chair for 3 years. It is not that we have low standards but we understand that "Rome was not built in 1 day".

You too realise that the barest minimum is allocated for medical health by the government and yet, CSL was able to fight and get for public hospitals doctors nationwide a salary and benefits review which they never had for the last 13 years and the increment was quite a bit. He also fought very hard for these doctors to be recognised and rewarded to entice them to stay on. Waiting time is now cut short from 1 full day to perhaps a few hours. There are other considerations such as special lane set up for the handicap, elderly, pregnant and children in all public hospital which never had such practise. It is now a breeze to take my grandma to University Hospital for checkup or medical help. What else? Stood up to JKR, Samy Very Bulu for building shoddy hospitals? Cost of essential medication for HIV has been drastically reduced in all public hospital which enable more HIV patients assessibility to better health care.

Yes, there were fuckups along the way but hey, we are not in paradise you know... of course, there will be problems and mistakes here and there... but what is important is there is no glaring waste of money such as buying tools that cost 100 times more or buying something that doesnt work..... These ministers are still around and commenting about this adultery issue like some high and mighty priest with no blemish on fidelity!

It is not when Malaysians will wake up and shake off the stupor that envelopes us. It is that we understand how things work here and are grateful for whatever little is done to make things a little better. Every baby step achieved is a victory in our country especially by a non-UMNO minister.

CSL is not great, neither is he flawless. He is just human.. just like you and me... full of nonsense and not perfect.

Damocles said...

Well Pearls if our government is really intent on improving the lot of the people, we, the electorate and the country would be at least ten times better off!
Instead, the funds in its coffers were squandered on grandiose projects that are supposed to burnish its image or whatever is left of it.
If a mere fraction of the funds that are wasted are channeled into good use by the Health Ministry, the patients, as well as the doctors, will be far, far better off!
I wonder whether you read other blogs. Blogs like that of Lim Kit Siang are an eye-opener and I think that you will do well to give it a try.
For your information, the news media is (with the exception of some Chinese media) completely controlled and owned the government.
By all means read them but with a few table spoons of salt! Also adopt an inquiring attitude!
For those who said that Rome was not built in a day, take a look at our southern neighbour, Singapore. They obtained independence later then us and they have been world class for ages now.
Where are we?
Remember, we have vast natural resources (including black gold - oil); they have nothing!
But they have brains and the will to succeed and benefit everyone! And they do what is good for the people and the country.
Here? I'll leave it to you and other Malaysians to speculate on that!

CSL sucks. He has been very cocky and said things that irritate onlookers on various issues. That's enough reason why he will not be mourned.
