Lulu Teach You How To Boil A Frog

if you put a frog in boiling water, it will instantly jump out. If you put it in cold water, and slowly bring it to a boil, the frog will sit there and boil to death because it cannot detect slow changes in its environment.

Remember Sabah and the CM rotation system?
Initiated by the Barisan Nasional in 1994, the Chief Minister's post was rotated among the coalition Malay/bumiSabah/Chinese parties every 2 years, regardless of the party in power at the time, kononnya giving an equal amount of time for each major ethnic group to rule the State.
March 1994 - December 1994 - Tan Sri Sakaran bin Dandai
December 1994 - May 1996 - Datuk Salleh Mohd Said Keruak
May 1996 - May 1998 - Datuk Yong Teck Lee
May 1998 - March 1999 - Tan Sri Bernard Dompok KadazanDusun
March 1999 - March 2001 - Datuk Seri Osu Sukam
March 2001 - March 2003 - Datuk Chong Kah Kiat
note : the KadazanDusun was "in power" in 99, there was an election that year, and the power switched hands before the 2 years was up.
After the 2004 elections, the rotation was scrapped, and no prizes for guessing which party the current CM is from, and forever and ever, which party he will be from.

How do you take over Penang?
the same way you boil a frog.
but now that you know how to boil a frog, don't ever give in!

Lulu Wants To JERIT!

remember this?

First they came for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up,because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up,because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up,because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me.

They came for Anwar in '98.
Now they've even come for the suraus in land that they want to take over.
This just came in from http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/60314

Chaos reigns in Kg Berembang
Nov 30, 06 1:24pm

The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council tore down the only remaining structure in Kampung Berembang in Ampang - a surau - but not before leaving the 30-year-old village looking like a battle ground.
Scores of residents of Kampung Berembang, along with members of several non-government organisations and political parties, were involved in a physical battle with enforcement officers from the council, who were backed by police and the Federal Reserve Unit to save the surau.
Last week, the council had demolished all the 50-odd houses in the village, leaving only the surau behind - that too after a long and hard protest by the villagers and members of a grassroots movement, Jerit.

They have come for the majority race, back in '98, and definetly today.
Will the majority race be softened by their handouts and continue to vote for them?
Or will they finally speak up and speak out against the UMNOputeras?

Lulu's Gotta Run

PM says implement project FAST
fast, fast, fast!
speedy, speedy fast!

How Fast?

yup! six weeks fast!

Per the circular from PWD, you need to implement the "project" which must be worth no more than RM200,000 and be completed by the end of this year. Six weeks time!

Hold it Lulu............... you're not involved. The money is only for bumiputera contractors.
Have you ever watched those "Supermarket Sweep" type of gameshows? The contestants are given a limited time to grab whatever they can from the aisle. The team which grabs the most is crowned the winner. Because of the rush in time, people just grab the most expensive items. Doesn't really make sense what the item is.
so, in this rush to implement the projects, don't be surprised if you suddenly see one of these structures in your neighbourhood

Lulu Does Not Like and Does Not Agree With Syed Nadzri's Premise

from Syed Nadzri on Tuesday

Overcoming the Chinese unease
28 Nov 2006
Syed Nadzri
THERE’S anxiety among the Chinese community. Even the money changers will tell you so. A close friend of Chinese origin told me he was at a currency exchange kiosk the other day when the man at the counter asked him: "What’s happening?

The Chinese seem to be cashing out the Malaysian ringgit for foreign currencies by the millions of late. The demand for foreign currencies has shot up by 10 times now. "What, I then asked my friend, has foreign money got to do with anxiety or restlessness among Malaysian Chinese? Oh plenty, he shot back. "It means they are looking at alternatives. They are sending more of their children to study abroad or they are investing and buying properties outside the country with a view to migrate if things get worse."

Mr Syed Nadzri Syed is currently the deputy group editor, and has been with NST since 1979. He will take over as another infamous NSTP-man as the group editor-designate on Dec 1.
One would think that he would have enough wisdom and intelligence to connect this peak season at the money changers with the year end holidays, people travelling abroad and needing the foreign currency.

Lulu has never contemplated migration, but would think that a lot of thought, procedure and preparation would be required to migrate. It would not be an overnight decision to pack up and leave. Likewise if it were for the children's education abroad. Investing on property abroad? Unless you are like a certain recently made UMNO Senator who believes in carrying 2mil cash, you would be using lawyers and a bank to make that investment.

Syed Nadzri, your column started with a wrong premise, bringing about a misconception on the Chinese resilience and loyalty.

Azmi Sharom Speaks Up For People Like Lulu

Dr. Azmi Sharom is an Associate professor of Law Faculty, University of Malaya. In his letter which was published by the Sun, he speaks up concerning what's not right in this country.

Fear-mongers drown out genuine issues

It would be an understatement to say that the just-concluded Umno General Assembly has caused a great deal of concern among right-thinking Malaysians, regardless of race. The language by many of the delegates was disgraceful. Although the prime minister did make conciliatory gestures in his closing address, the fact remains that not one of the Umno delegates, with the exception of Markiman Kobiran, publicly said anything against such behaviour. This to me indicates that such thinking is reflective of the thinking of the rank and file and that is worrying. This is not some fringe group we are talking about here, this is Umno and it is the ruling party.
He further examines the differences between Rights vs privileges, debunking 'Threats' to Islam and reminding us of Genuine issues ignored

He ends with
It is the future of Malaysia that we should be concerned about and honest discussions about what we can do to secure that future is what we need to hear from the so-called leaders of the country. Not the scoring of cheap shots and not the obtaining of political mileage from appealing to the lowest and basest instincts of man. If we are not mature enough to rationally examine what this country truly needs, and more importantly, if the leaders of the nation are not mature enough to do this, all of us, Malays, Indians, Chinese, indigenous peoples, all us ordinary Malaysians, we will suffer.

Lulu No Confidence in Government Negotiatiors

from the star's update Toll rates for five highways to go up on Jan 1
KUALA LUMPUR: Toll rates for five highways will go up on Jan 1 next year as the Government can no longer afford to subsidise toll increases, Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said Monday.

how did we end up in such a situation?

a quote from Aliran's Dr Mustafa K Anuar, Asst Secretary back in 21st December 2004 when semivalue announced the hike for 1Jan05
The government appears to have painted itself into a corner by making such a lop-sided agreement, which allows the highway concessionaire to periodically raise the toll rates without regard to the higher traffic volume on the highway.
It is such a blatantly one-sided agreement, which even stipulates that the government must pay hefty compensations if for any reason the toll hikes are deferred.

Lulu doesn't know which is worse - that the negotiators in the agreement were biased and had vested interest or they were just plain stupid.

if it is indeed the latter, then we're such goners come the US FTA negotiations.
Rafidah has such confidence that Malaysia won’t ink lopsided FTAs with other countries.
Yeah.

Lulu Recalls The Not-So-Friendly Statements

The Sun http://www.sun2surf.com/article.cfm?id=16106
Malaysiakini http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/59631

Youth information chief Datuk Azimi Daim
Umno Youth must be more effective, creative and proactive in defending suchights and privileges, as these are issues that make members jump. When certain issues come up, it is natural for the warrior blood in the veins of the Malays to become heated.

Razali Idris (Terengganu)
The Malay's economic growth is only about 2%, while the non-bumiputra's is at 6%. This wide disparity will create unrest and an incident like May 13 might repeat but this time, the parang will not fly. An ants' nest should not be disturbed.

Mohd Effendi Yusof (Kelantan)
Don't play with fire...we (muslims) will fight till the end.

Hasnoor Sidang Hussein, (Malacca)
Umno is willing to risk lives and bathe in blood in defence of race and religion. Don't play with fire. If they mess with our rights, we will mess with theirs.

Tan Sri Mohamad Rahmat
Don't test the Malays, they know 'amok'

Consistent to UMNOputera mentality, instead of disciplining the fire pokers, the first thing that came to mind was to stop live telecasts of future Umno general assemblies.
No wonder why they never learn...

btw, this week was the damage control week. Lulu would like to post this story again for the benefit of new Lulu readers. Because THEY will never learn, Lulu may have to post this again and again in the near future.

There is a 19th century folktale about a man who went about town slandering the town's wise man. One day, he went to the wise man's home and asked for forgiveness. The wise man, realizing that this man had not internalized the gravity of his transgressions, told him that he would forgive him on one condition: that he go home, take a feather pillow from his house, cut it up, and scatter the feathers to the wind. After he had done so, he should then return to the wise man's house.

Though puzzled by this strange request, the man was happy to be let off with so easy a penance. He quickly cut up the pillow, scattered the feathers, and returned to the house."Am I now forgiven?" he asked.

"Just one more thing," the wise man said. "Go now and gather up all the feathers."

"But that's impossible. The wind has already scattered them."

"Precisely," he answered. "And though you may truly wish to correct the evil you have done, it is as impossible to repair the damage done by your words as it is to recover the feathers. Your words are out there in the marketplace, spreading hate, even as we speak."

Lulu Notes That KJ Contradicts His Boss

Hishammuddin Onn in an interview with the NST dated 15-Nov

Q: Do you find this year's meeting different from previous years?
A: Yes. Issues which were deemed sensitive in the past were openly discussed by the delegates. This is a good development as it showed our young leaders are responsible in their action.
KJ in his column in the NST today

When I checked with several other more experienced Umno figures if my impression that the debate this year was no more, no less emotionally charged than those in the past, they agreed based on historical perspectives that far outstretch mine. To them, there was nothing new with the rhetoric. It had all been said and articulated before, many times over. The only difference this time around was that the proceedings were carried "live" on television.
KJ uses the basis of "same old, same old" as the basis of argument for the rest of his posting.

Now that logically begs the question: If the rhetoric in Umno has always been like this, then shouldn’t non-Malays be even more worried since this is the norm? The answer is an emphatic "no".
Other quotes from his column.
For those who are peddling around the spin that the recent Umno assembly is testament to intolerance and even racism, ...
So the fact that this happens year after year...
To understand the Umno assemblies...
The general assembly has always been...
Although there was nothing new in the intensity of the rhetoric this year,...

yah KJ, tell us about it. Your credibility reaches to the skies... in your own eyes that is.
btw, did you check with your boss if it was any different, or has his opinion changed now that the wind is blowing in the "no different" direction?

Lulu Was Reminded Of A Few Things In Church Today

Lamentations 3
17 I have been deprived of peace;
I have forgotten what prosperity is.
18 So I say, "My splendor is gone
and all that I had hoped from the LORD."
19 I remember my affliction and my wandering,
the bitterness and the gall.
20 I well remember them,
and my soul is downcast within me.
21 Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:
22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.

James 4:17 Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.

1 Peter 3:14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened."

There is a feeling of fear in this nation - high level politicians waving keris, Article 11 mobs, researchers are threatened for the statistics they publish, temples being torn down.
They may try to downplay it, but it's there.
Fear.
But Lulu will not be frightened, for the Lord is with her, and Lulu will continue to speak up, to play her small role in doing what is right.

MCA roadshows to explain Umno's rascist remarks to Lulu?

Someone once remarked that MCA's existence in BN is not to represent the Chinese voice in BM, but to bring the UMNO voice to the Chinese.

When Lulu saw this headline on Malaysiakini, MCA roadshows to explain Umno's rascist remarks, Lulu clicked onto the article to try to understand exactly what this roadshow is about.
Doesn't say much.
The racist flames ignited at the Umno general assembly last week seems to have burnt the ruling party’s non-Malay partners in the Barisan Nasional (BN)
with MCA being the first casualty. Party top leaders, including four ministers, will meet with grassroots leaders by way of a nation-wide road-show to explain the party's stand on several current issues, including the racist remarks made by Umno delegates to the assembly. The roadshow is aimed at alleviating discontent among party members disquieted by the statements made during the assembly.
WHy the need to explain to the grassroot leaders? Shouldn't MCA instead be meeting up with their BN partners to lodge their unhappiness and uneasiness over the remarks made?
Or are they going to end up doing what they do best - explaining UMNOs policies?
We'll see...

If This Didn't Happen in M'sia, Lulu May Have Had A Good Laugh

but it didn't.

Believe it or not, LAPORAN POLIS BERHUBUNG AISKRIM WALL'S MOO

The incriminating evidence?

Lulu's trying to figure out whether it's insecurity or ignorance which is causing them to come up with such lulu-thoughts.

It is just a cross - cross as in pangkah, not salib. cross, like a plus sign. Gosh... does this mean that everytime you see a '+' sign in your children's math book, it's a subtle way of promoting Christianity? Or that one of these days, when your kid shows you your book with a lot of crosses, are you going to storm into the school [with the keris?] and accuse her of attempting to convert your child?

Marina Mahathir calls this the propagation of the shallow and superficial, for short, the SS.
Lulu wants to add one more S to it - stupid. Posted by Picasa

Lulu Confused Over Contact Lens Guy's Bond

Remember the contact lens guy? Well, he's out on bond.
Abdul Razak Baginda was released on a RM1mil court bond after he claimed trial to a charge of abetting in the murder of Mongolian beauty Altantuya Shaariibuu.
The 46-year-old political analyst was allowed to go home yesterday after a High Court here allowed his release under the bond, which was without security, due to his poor health.

Do you know what it means to be release under the bond, which was without security?
The article which follows, No deposit needed for certain court bonds, explains that the bail amount is not deposited. The person who stands surety is only required to sign a bond that compels him to pay the bail amount in the event the accused person absconds, according to criminal lawyer M. Manoharan.

TheStar reports that
The analyst’s brother Dr Abdul Rani Abdullah, 49, and sister Rohannee Abdullah, 50, acted as sureties for the bond.
Before they agreed to it, Justice Abdul Kadir reminded them of an additional condition imposed on the bond – the automatic forfeiture of RM100,000 in the event that Razak defaults.
Does this mean that if Razak tak datang, only RM100,000 is forfeited, not RM1,000,000?
Then why bother saying that he is out on a RM1mil bond when the no-show penalty is 1/10th of the bond?

Or is Lulu not understanding this bond thing?

Apa 'ni? Lulu Asks

A councilman who operates an illegal satay stall operating with no approved building plan, no business permit and sat on government land without a Temporary Occupational Licence (TOL) is considered "model citizen" enough to be nominated and accepted as a councilman? Yup, only in Bolehland. Bernama reports that MPK Councillors Sworn-in Under Tight Security

KLANG, Nov 24 (Bernama)
The swearing-in ceremony of 18 Klang municipal councillors for the 2006-2008 term was held Friday under tight security, with roads leading to the council (MPK) building here heavily guarded by about 40 policemen and the council's enforcement unit personnel. While policemen, traffic policemen and Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel mounted road blocks at the perimeter of the building, MPK's enforcement unit personnel guarded every access into it and the hall where the swearing-in ceremony took place. The ceremony began at 9am and proceeded without any untoward incident.
gosh... were they expecting protests and prepared themselves for a fracas? Why would they think so if they had appointed candidates of good virtues and fair judgement?
Zainuri, when met after the ceremony, said he was happy and thankful to God that he could finally be sworn in as the ceremony was postponed a few times."I will uphold the good name of MPK and as a councillor, it is not a licence to do things at our whims and fancies," he said, adding that he would give an excellent service befitting the responsibility and confidence entrusted upon him.

yah. Take it from a guy whose family took it as a license to do things at their whims and fancies.

Lulu Does Not Understand Khir Toyo and the UMNO boys

The bulldozers are definetly at work in Toyoland.

but instead of tearing this illegal istana down,
they tore down homes belonging to some 500 residents of Kampung Berembang in Ampang.

read more on it at
Media For The Working Class Kids In Malaysia
and
‘We're refugees in our own land’
and
Activists arrested in clash over village houses

Lulu knows this is very Toyoland and Umnoland, but Lulu will never be able to accept the reason why.
Why is it that the UMNO boys can boldly stand and defend and even fight to not tear down Istana Idaman, but would be silent, invisible and maybe even participants of tearing down the homes of 60 homes which if added up do not even come up to 10% of Istana Idaman.

Lulu Ponders, Is It True That Without UMNO, these CEOs Won't Be Where They Are Today?

The Malaysian Professionals, regardless of race, at Promuda's discussion group have spoken strongly about the reality and implications of Khairy's outburst

"What disappoints me is that on the one hand, here we are saying that we have to get our GLCs to be world-class, with a service to the people first mentality. Then we have Khairy tell us all that we did not pick the best candidate to be CEO, merely the ones which UMNO backs. Furthermore, these CEOs are then expected to select not the best/cost-effective vendor but the vendor that UMNO chooses. " - one of the responses from the discussion on promuda_circle

Remember Lulu had said that as an investment banker, Khairy is a failure? Lets add one more into his non-resume. Head of a corporation / conglomerate. He'd be the type who would hire based on who are your connections, and afterthat, he'd expect favours from you.

Lulu Shares a Folklore from Pak Bustmann

Lulu was reading Di Bawah Rang Ikang Kering Random Ramblings of A Retired Retainer a few days ago.
Pak Bustamann posted an old malay folklore which Lulu found very interesting, but Lulu, being a lulu, could not figure out exactly which current hot news brought the memories of this tale to him.
Quoting from Pak Bustamann
A village lady left her baby under the watchful eyes of her trusty and intelligent pet cat. When she came back later, she was shocked to find the baby bloodied and dead. The cat was beside the baby, its face covered with blood. Her grief quickly turned to monumental fury and she killed the cat with her bare hands.
Much later, when she was cleaning the room, she found a dead snake. The snake was mangled by bite and scratch marks. She was stunned by the realization and later by a very deep remorse. She knew now that it was the snake that attacked her baby and her cat must have killed the snake.
When Lulu saw Tony P's posting this morning, Lulu immediately thought of Pak Bustamann's tale.

The numbers from the Ninth Malaysia Plan [Chapter 16 on Acheiving Growth With Distribution] show that the incidence of poverty is 0.3% of their population, and the incidence of hardcore poverty is negligible. Amongst all the states, Umno ruled and otherwise, Penang has the lowest rate. The small little island state has indeed taken good care of their people, contrary to what some people are trying to lead other to believe.
Maybe Khairy thought "begging for projects" = beggars = marginalised = poor ?

Isn't this like the folklore?
the village mother = UMNO youth, be it Hisham, Khairy, Adnan and the whole gang
the heroic cat = Tan Sri Dr Koh and Gerakan
the snake = erhm...

IN the folklore, the mother felt deep remorse for having killed the cat which was protecting her young.
IN real-life Bolehland, would the accusers cum baseless romour mongers apologise and thank Gerakan for having kept the Malays out of poverty in Penang? Posted by Picasa

Lulu Wants To Say "Terima Kasih"

from the NST

Rules on khalwat raids to be revised 16 Nov 2006
PUTRAJAYA: Khalwat raids will be standardised and based on clear guidelines to avoid untoward incidents.
Following a review of the existing guidelines by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) yesterday, it was also decided that only officers certified by either the Religious Council or the Sultan would be authorised to conduct such raids. A Jakim officer told the New Straits Times that a meeting to brief all states on the new guidelines would be held from Nov 23 to 25.The revised guidelines covered all vital aspects including the best way to take down reports and ways of conducting raids.
"The meeting (yesterday) was held to tighten the loose parts of the existing guidelines which had raised a lot of unhappiness and complaints," the officer said.
Under the revised guidelines, certified officers, including imam, will have to attend courses. At present, due to the shortage of religious enforcement officers in the states, civilians are given authority cards which empower them to book Muslim couples suspected of committing khalwat. Now these civilians will only act as witnesses during raids which will be led by an authorised chief enforcement officer.
Prior to a raid, enforcement officers will also need to study each report thoroughly to determine whether the allegations were true.Explaining the procedures when mounting raids, the officer said although enforcement officers need not be escorted by the police, they needed to have warrants before they could enter any premises.
However, if swift action is required, the enforcement officers could forgo the need for a warrant and use their authority cards instead. But they must lodge a police report after the raid.
Members of the public have the right to deny entry to those without authority cards. On the shortage of manpower, the officer said at present, there were only 150 enforcement officers nationwide. These officers had to deal with 40 types of offences apart from khalwat. These include gambling, consumption of alcohol and deviationist teachings involving Muslims.
When contacted, Jakim director general Datuk Mustafa Abdul Rahman urged religious officers to observe the guidelines issued by the department. He noted
that the failure of some officers to abide by the guidelines had caused unwarranted problems."If you get a report that a Muslim couple is committing khalwat but after conducting a raid, you discover that it is not true, apologise," he advised. He said the course for religious enforcement officers would also include legal aspects to enhance their professionalism. He stressed that officers must act responsibly so as not to tarnish the country’s image.
Mustafa was referring to the uproar following a khalwat raid which was mistakenly carried out against an elderly foreign couple in Langkawi by the Kedah Islamic Affairs Department last month. Jakim also reiterated that although Muslim foreigners here were subjected to Islamic laws, there were no plans to include non-Muslims in its enforcement efforts.

Thank You for clarifying this, and showing humility to look into your procedures and making an effort to rectify the loopholes.

Lulu Wonders How Stupid He Must Be Feeling

Meet the doctor and the dentist.
Highly qualified men, chosen through stringent tests from thousands of qualified candidates. One of them will be Malaysia's glorified astronaut.
Yes, in this day and age where space tourism packages are available, bolehland still makes a big deal in this paid trip to space.

Lulu almost fainted when she saw theStar's update last night.

Kena main five stones in space?
ANd the Science, Technology and Innovations Ministry calls it an "opportunity to conduct scientific experiments in space"?
ANd they proudly proclaim it as Malaysia is will do what no one in space has done before?
ARe we so bankrupt of research ideas? Is this the best that we can come up with?

Gosh, don't you wonder how our stupid our glorified astrounaut must be feeling?
He'd as well go fly a wau

Lulu Posts Animal Farm Chapter1

MR. JONES, of the Manor Farm, had locked the hen-houses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the popholes. With the ring of light from his lantern dancing from side to side, he lurched across the yard, kicked off his boots at the back door, drew himself a last glass of beer from the barrel in the scullery, and made his way up to bed, where Mrs. Jones was already snoring.

----------------
Lulu decided that this is quite a lulu thing to do to post it on this blog.
So, Lulu has shifted it to www.lulufarm.blogspot.com
AND has posted all 10 chapters there.
Happy reading!

Lulu Thinnks Malaysia Has The Makings of The Animal Farm

I can’t remember exactly when I first read Animal Farm, but I remember being totally fascinated how the farm animals had degenerated.
At that point, Lulu wasn’t so chim [not that i am today either...], so didn’t see that it was an allegory of the Russian Revolution, particularly directed against Stalin's Russia.
But now, many many years later, as Lulu watches the direction the country is being taken, Lulu cannot help but see the parallels between Animal Farm and her country. Lulu's not the only one, as you can see from some of the comments on Lulu's Blog and also from other socio-political blogs.

So, starting today, Lulu is going to post 2 chapters a day of the book, and who knows, maybe at the end of it, we can discuss it.

Enjoy!

a Lulu Sing-A-Long (again!) - Let's Go Wave A Keris

Original Version
Let's Go Fly a Kite - from Soundtrack of Mary Poppins
Written by: Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman

Let's go fly a kite
Up to the highest height
Let's go fly a kite
And send it soaring

Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let's go fly a kite
Let's go fly a kite!

Lulu Version
Let's Go Wave A Keris - from Lulu Poppins

Let’s go wave a keris
Up to the highest height
Lets go wave a keris
And show them who is Tuan

Up through PWTC
Maybe dip in blood
Oh, let’s go wave a keris

Let’s go wave a keris!

Lulu accused of having a backward thinking and understanding of the Malay Culture

This year, instead of waving the keris around, he decided to display the keris on the podium.
Kononnya, it was not intended to send any sinister message to Malaysians of other races.

Then he goes on to accuse those who felt anxiety over the keris waving last year of having a backward thinking and understanding of their culture.

Tuan Hisham,
let Lulu take you back to another time and same space. Maybe you were too young to remember. Or too busy Skrine&Co-ing.

Well, your cousin not just waved a keris, he was talking about soaking it with Chinese blood.

One oft-cited instance of this is a rally held by UMNO Youth shortly before Ops Lallang in 1987, where future Deputy Prime Minister and then UMNO Youth Chief Najib Razak threatened to bathe a keris (dagger) with Chinese blood. [52]
At the same rally, banners were hoisted carrying phrases such as "revoke the citizenship of those who opposed the Malay rulers", "May 13 has begun" (referring to the
May 13 racial riots in 1969), and "soak it (the keris) with Chinese blood". [53]
source : Wikipedia

Lulu give you another example
On Feb 4, 2001, the Malay Action Front (MAF) organised the "Takkan Melayu Hilang Di Dunia" rally at the UMNO-owned Putra World Trade Centre. There were blood-curdling posters and banners with the Malay keris in a sea of blood. Yup, the logo of the gathering was an outstretched hand holding a "kris" (the traditional Malay dagger) set against a red backdrop with the words Melayu Bersatu (Malays Unite)
source : http://pemantau.tripod.com/2001/10Feb_ghafar.html
http://lamankm2a.tripod.com/cgi-bin/forum.cgi?read=3726

Yesterday, at the Umno Youth Assembly, you said

non-Malays,” he claimed, saying that it only embodies the hopes and aspirations
of Malays to be attained through the struggles of the party.

Looking at the history of the keris this past 10 years, it's telling me different.

Lulu Think Tourism Minister Picking Wrong Bone

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor thinks that by lowering the MAS fares for British Pound and Euro earners, it would encourage more Europeans to visit Malaysia.

Tengku Adnan said that he would ask the Transport Ministry to hold immediate discussions with MAS to lower its fares in Europe.
He said the demands of the European tourists, especially British tourists, must be taken seriously as they were among the top contributors to Malaysia’s foreign exchange earnings.

Lulu Thinks TA should focus on our religious department's wrongdoing which has reached the international press.

See, we're infamous for our Muslim raid.
Not for our MAS rates.
It's a lot more detering to have 6 men pounding (or knocking depending on whose version you are following) on your door and demanding to inspect your condominium on suspicion of "khalwat," and having them become aggressive and asking to see the "woman" and demanding to look at your marriage certificate
This bad press, we can do without.

Instead of leaving your Deputy Minister to do damage control, why don't you take over and demand that the state religious department abide in their jurusdiction.
Yes, we do not deny your right in shariah law where khalwat is the crime of being in close proximity to someone of the opposite sex who is neither a spouse nor a relative. But the law does not apply to non-Muslims in Malaysia.
The Cabinet needs to reassure all Malaysians and all the foreign tourists that their privacy will always be protected and nobody is subjected to harassment from Islamic Religious Officers.

Lulu Wonders If NUJ Is Going To Take This Sitting Down

she sat down, in this very same skirt and blouse, 女記者示範坐下姿態,讓讀者評評理。(放大)
only to find there was a camera focused on her thighs.
Guang Ming Ribao reporter Ong Beng Siang said he spotted the images on the CCTV monitor in the control room next to the public gallery. “The camera was focusing on the thighs of women seated in the front row for more than 15 minutes. It is the work of a peeping tom,” said Ong, who took several pictures of the images.
The next day, the star reports

PENANG: If the dress was not sexy, the incident would not have happened.

This was Penang Municipal Council president Datuk Abu Bakar Hassan’s response to a complaint that a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera in the City Hall was zooming in on the thighs of women journalists instead of council proceedings.

No apologies.
only that, as thestar puts it,
If the dress was not sexy, the incident would not have happened
"We are not saying that she was at fault for wearing a skirt, but we need to look whether there is any loophole in the dress code,"
Lulu really wonders, NUJ, are you going to take this sitting down?

The Next Time Some Bigot Tells Lulu To "Cina Balik",

can I whip up my Wikipedia list, and ask him to check if he sendiri needs to balik?

Ancestries Claimed by Malaysian Malays
It really maddens me when these racist bigots, confronted for their sins, bankrupt of explanations and morals, start screaming
"Cina Balik"

At most, I'll balik PJ. Cos that's where I was born and lived all my life.
Not China.
And
I will not ask you to balik Johor, or Kedah, or Kelantan, or wherever you are from.
I will not so pathetically ask you to balik Indonesia or Pakistan or wherever your ancestors came from.
I will not ask you why are you supporting and funding the Aceh separationists.
I will not ask you why you treat your Indonesian brethren so badly considering that you are of the same stock, just that you/your parents/your grandparents made it here first.

This is my nation as much as it is yours. Stop asking me to "Cina Balik".

Whilst Lulu Was Sleeping, Malay Population in M'sia Grew to 65%

in today's NST report, Tok Pah says that
"Based on figures received at the last intake, only 50 per cent of Malays took up critical courses, when Malays make up 65 per cent of the country’s total population."

hum....
are the Malays at 65% yet? I don't think so...

Not many ethnic breakdown available online
US State Gov has one
People Nationality: Noun and adjective--Malaysian(s).
Population (2004): 25.6 million.
Annual growth rate: 2.4%.
Ethnic groups: Malay 50.8%, Chinese 23.8%, Indigenous 10.9%, Indian 7.1%, non-Malaysian citizens 6.8 %, others 0.6%.

aisee....
TokPah's may have confused the indigenous genuine bumi-puteras as Malays.

So, Tok Pah, are you telling us that 10% of the places in the critical courses would be set aside for the Orang Asli?
What is the plan for JHEOA in ensuring this?
tell us! tell us!
Do the Orang Asli of M'sia justice, just like how the UMNOputeras insist we give them "their" share.

Then They Came For Lulu, and By That Time There Was No One Left To Speak Up For Her

Have you heard of the poem which starts with "First they came…"?
It is a poem attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group.

First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up,
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me.

WHy is Lulu bringing this up?
This was in the papers today.

American couple gets apology and payment
10 Nov 2006
KUALA LUMPUR: It wasn’t exactly what he was asking for, but American tourist Randal K. Barnhart was happy to accept a verbal apology and a goodwill payment from the Langkawi Tourism Action Council (LTAC).
Last month, 62-year-old Barnhart and his wife Carole Joanne, 61, who were renting a condominium in Langkawi, were awakened by a pounding on their door at 2am. Six men from the state Religious Department demanded to inspect their home, and asked to see his "woman" when Barnhart refused to let them in. They asked the couple to produce their marriage certificate and noted their particulars from their passports before they left.
Barnhart wanted three things: A letter of apology from the department, a letter that they will not be bothered again, and compensation of RM4,315 — the amount he paid to send his traumatised wife back to the United States.
The Tourism Ministry asked for a full report from the Kedah Menteri Besar and the department before meeting the couple.
"The religious officers were just carrying out their duties as enforcement officers. The only problem here is that they mishandled the couple," said an LTAC spokesman.
He stressed that the sum paid to the Barnharts was purely a goodwill gesture.Barnhart said: "They apologised to me although they were not at fault, and I understand their concern."But he added that he had heard nothing from the Religious Department and might take legal action, depending on his lawyer’s advice. In order to prevent a repeat of this incident, the LTAC is now acting as adviser to the Integrated Operation Board set up by Langkawi enforcement agencies.

The incident happened in Langkawi, Kedah.
the LTAC spokesman has said that it was well in the religious officers right to go banging at doors and forcing an American couple to open up, and prove that they were married.
Carrying out their "duties".
Today there are carrying out their duties on an American couple.
Tomorrow, it may be your non-Muslim friend in Alor Star.
And coming soon, they'll be knocking at your door in KL.
Carrying out their "duties".

It's just a matter of time, and we would be allowing this to happen if we do not make our voices heard.

Can Lulu Ask A Practical Question?

if you were were going to be remanded the next 5 days, wouldn't you ask for your spectacles instead of contact lenses?
This man asked for his contact lenses when produced in court.

Lulu never gone to prison or worn contact lenses before. But from Lulu's many years of experience gained from watching TV and reading, you need to keluarkan your contact lenses waktu tidur and Lulu would imagine that prison and the holding cell at the police lockup would not be very clean.

Unless he is getting a 1st class cell, that was not a very practical request.

Lulu Wondering If There's Any Connection Between

Lulu's Hiring

Many, many years ago, in the last millenium, when Lulu used to work in a kilang, one of my execs told me that he saw his uni mate on the production floor. This friend of his, passed out of UUM, but because it was 1999 and there was a bad recession then, he could not get a job. After months of mengangguring, he decided to jadi mat kilang [dunno if there's such a term, but i guess this would be the male equivalent to minah kilang]. He asked my colleague not to tell anyone that he's actually a degree holder.

Now, many many years later, Lulu has a vacancy in her department. It is an admin/clerical position, and does not require a degree holder to do the work.
I passed word around, and have since received some resume from friends of the girls in my dept.
Needless to say, there are a few degree holders amongst them. Mostly from the election-promise universities and UiTM.
One candidate passed out of UiTM with a Dip in Accountancy in 2002, and up to today, is still working part-time at his family's restaurant as a waiter and chef.
Another has a degree in Business Computing, graduated in 2004, and has been working as a clerk since.

In moments like these, Lulu gets very angry with the government's policy to churn out as many graduates as they can even though they can't.
Why does Lulu say they can't?
1. The candidates either do not have the intellectual capacity, or they have been robbed of their potential when they were given the easy way out when they were young. When a child is given a more slack grading curve, their capacity is neither challenged nor stretched in its formative years.
2. Lack of teaching staff
Ministry of Higher Education list out 18 IPTA . Ten years ago, Lulu thinks there were only half that number. The explosion of IPTA did not come with an explosion of academics. I don't even want to talk about the quality of the teaching staff.

Maybe Higher Education in Malaysia is still in it's infancy.
Maybe we're like China in the early 80s - mass manufacturing low quality products
or Japan in the 70s - Milo tin can cars.
Maybe 20 years later, we'll rise like China and Japan.
Maybe
Maybe
Maybe
But how can we succeed if we do not strive to improve.

and in the meantime, young kids like Mr Sarafen and Ms Suhaida will leave their kampungs for universities, carrying with them the family's dream and aspiration that there will be a graduate in the family, that they'll pergi KL, dapat kerja sebagai eksekutif and move one notch up the social ladder only to find out 4 years later their "education" is not respected by potential employers rendering them not good enough for "executive" work and too good for clerical work.

Sad, isn't it?

Just as Lulu Was Thinking...

and Lulu wasn't the only one who has noticed.

some interesting bits from Opposition parties protest against MB
[reported in the sun online. didn't see it in the star or nst during the weekend]

SHAH ALAM (Nov 3, 2006) :
Police sealed all entrances to the Selangor state administrative building here today, forcing public delivery services to be suspended half a day after Friday prayers.
Police resorted to the harsh action after about 50 Keadilan, PAS and DAP members turned up to stage a protest, demanding transparency in the state government's handling of land alienation.
"Khir Toyo, who is also in-charge of land and financial Matters in the state executive council, was not transparent and had allowed the awarding of land to Umno leaders and their families without ensuring they were eligible," said Shamsul.
He also made the following allegations:
- Presence of elements of corruption in the land allocation issue in the interest of individuals;
- Abuse of power when status of land meant for temporary occupation (TOL) and for construction of religious school was converted and sold to Zakaria's wife, Datin Zizah Ngah;
- Non-disclosure on the criteria of awarding the land to Zizah and how it had benefited the state and the public;
- Abuse of power when the state government offered the land to Zizah at a discounted rate.
There was also the "incident" about the six acres of Tmn Desaria land was reserved for a religious school and a Tenaga Nasional Berhad sub-station.
These are only what Lulu can recall, and you know-la, Lulu's memory no good, and what has been exposed so far.

Lulu doesn't think that Zak and family and Zahar and family are the only beneficiaries of the state's "generosity". There's bound to be more.

Which started Lulu thinking... KT has been MB since Y2k. He must have given out most of the Klang, Port Klang, Ulu Klang, Kg Datuk Harun, Sunway etc land to "deserving" people to the state. What else is there left to give away? Takkan nak bagi tanah kat Banting? Yang tu, so jauh and boring-la!

and what does Lulu see in NST today?

KT wants to Canal City will be built on the banks of a man-made river, an 18km waterway that will wind its way between Kg Jaya Sepakat in Puchong and Kg Sg Rambai in Jenjarom. The river will also connect Sungai Klang and Sungai Langat to reduce the velocity of water flow. "We will also create several canals that will connect to the main river. This would enable a proper river transportation system," he told the New Straits Times. The new growth centre would encompass several towns, including Kuala Langat, Banting, Dengkil and Sepang. To be jointly developed by the state’s investment arm Permodalan Negeri Selangor, Talam Corp Bhd and IJM Corp Bhd, the area would be modelled on Venice in Italy

Talam Corp? That got Lulu distracted. Talam's track record not very good. They are a PN17 company, which "coincidentally" on the 4th of Nov, the Star reports they hope to reverse PN17 status by April.
err... something's not right here?

Staying on track.

Hasn't KT heard of location, location, location ? As it is, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya, with all the things going for it, is a ghost town on weekends. It has not been so successful in being a favored place to live in. Man made river running through it? A rose is still a rose by any other name. Likewise for a longkang.

Anyhow, not like Lulu's opinion is going to make any difference. [this is additional reason wht we need to Change the Menu] KT now has a "reason" to give out "development" contracts and land for the "deserving". Looks like the UMNOputeras need not worry about scraping the bowl known as Selangor for a while.

However, Lulu pula yang worried. Posted by Picasa

Lulu Give Quiz

Tonixe predicts
in 21 days nobody will remember who is this guy !

Let's see how many can actually remember ,

1. without google-ing it, what is the name of the One-Eye MP of Jasin?
2. a. Were there any consequences to his actions?
b. If yes to [a], what were they?

2b, Lulu is asking because Lulu seriously cannot recall whether there were any or not.

To Tonixe's prediction, Lulu has a lousy feeling that he is right.
BUT in the next election, whoever who is running in PortKlang will remind the people if they have forgotten. With Zakaria's Palace of Shame serving as a living memorial, it does make campaigning easier.

Zakaria (from the Sound of Lulu)
I hate to have to say it but I very firmly feel
Zakaria's not an asset to Selangor
I like to say a word in his behalf
Zakaria makes me laugh

How do solve a problem like Zakaria
How do catch a crook and bring him down
How do you solve a solution for Zakaria……..
How do you hold a corrupt UMNOputera to the law

sorry for those who were hoping for a solution.
It looks like UMNO and their practise of select law enforcement is moving towards the direction of letting him off the hook.
Kononnya, cannot robohkan the rumah cos "If Zakaria’s house is torn down, what about the others?"
Well, KT, you can leave it there and it will be a powerful symbol for the opposition. Gosh... instead of using the popular bulan, symbolism of pangkahkan "istana" may be a more appealing to the people of S'gor.
Or, KT, you could fine him under the max RM500K or 2 years in jail. Saman and jail time will not hurt his political career. It's already ended. Yours, maybe not. Salvage yours.

What has been happening to the man whom , according to Setiausaha Sulit baginda, Datuk Mohd Munir Bani, HRH Sultan's advise to

Sebagai orang Melayu, beliau hendaklah bersikap sopan santun dan berbudi bahasa

Well, the sopan santun berbudi bahasa man has spoken today. In a NST headlined "Public will be the big loser, claims Zakaria" .
excerpts

Datuk Zakaria Mat Deros has never been short of confidence throughout his years in politics. This self-belief, which helped him rise from railway worker to political strongman, was on show yesterday. Despite being slapped with a series of negative disclosures about his conduct, the state assemblyman for Port Klang said the public would be the big loser with him no longer in the Klang Municipal Council.
In stark contrast to his Press conference on Tuesday, he did not shed tears or seem crestfallen. Instead, he seemed like a man who believed that the worst was over.
Lulu told you, "Zakaria makes me LAUGH".

Iban longhouse community of Rumah Nyawin - Lulu Help

Have you ever been evicted from your home?
What if your home is also your rice bowl?

Lulu was reading Susan Loone's entry on Indigenous Group Starts Campaign to Save Community From Eviction and Lulu felt quite angry and sad that this is happening.

additional info

The Iban longhouse community of Rumah Nyawin, Bintulu, Sarawak, is facing imminent eviction on November 4, 2006,after receiving an eviction notice on October 4 from the Bintulu Land and Survey Department. They have appealed to the Department, as well as local politicians and the chief of police. The Department has not replied, while the chiefof police insists they will be evicted. At least one local politicians, however, has sided with the community.

They are being evicted from their 333 hectares of traditional farms and forests, bordering the Similajau Forest Reserve, to make way forthe Malaysian Research and Development Institute (MARDI), which was granted title to the land without informed consent of the community in2002.The community successfully negotiated having their lands spared from development by MARDI in 2003. They produced a community map in 2004 with help from community mappers at Sarawak Dayak Iban Association and Borneo Resources Institute, which was submitted to the Land and SurveyDepartment, and MARDI.

MARDI has already developed a small area, next to R. Nyawin's land, but did not encroach onto their land. They have repeatedly stated they respect the NCR boundaries and have no need to evict the community.

However, the Land and Survey Department appears determined to evict them.

For more information, contact: Jessica Lawrence, www.borneoproject.org

Lulu asked Susan how she can help.
Susan sent me an email template to the Land and Surver Dept requesting for a clarification on their intention.
Would you like to join Lulu and Susan and email this template too? Lulu does not want this atrocity to go down quietly.
Please copy the text in blue, and mail it out to all the to&cc list.
Feel free to cut and paste this on your blog, and to forward the mail to all your friends.
Hopefully our simple act will make a powerful difference in the lives of the people of Rumah Nyawin.

Dear Mr. Superintendent,

Urgent Matter of Indigenous Land Rights
We wish to request your reply to an urgent matter of indigenous land rights, namely the threatened eviction of the Iban community of RumahNyawin, at Mile 32 on the Bintulu-Bakun Road, Bintulu, Sarawak, as described by an article in the Borneo Post on 6 October 2006.

We understand that your department has issued a 30 day eviction noticeto this community as of 4 October, 2006.

We are encouraged to learn that holder of the land title, the Malaysian Research and Development Institute (MARDI) has stated as recently as October 19, 2006 that it does not need or wish to encroachon the native customary rights land (NCR) of the community of RumahNyawin, and it has not called for their eviction. This NCR land of Rumah Nyawin is roughly 334 hectares, as documented in their community map, produced in cooperation with an experienced surveyor, which was submitted to your Department as well as MARDI in 2004.

We are also encouraged to note that Kidurong State Assemblyman Mr.Chiew Chiu Sing has also declared his support with the longhouse community, asking your Department to respect their native customaryrights.

Considering that Malaysia is a signatory to the Declaration of Rights of Indigenous Peoples through the UN Human Rights Council as of June 2006, it would be appropriate for the Bintulu Land and Survey Department to implement the right to Free Prior Informed Consent by indigenous people regarding all activities on their lands. In this case, the indigenous occupants of the land have clearly not consented to their eviction from their longhouse, farms (temuda) and protected forests (pulau), as evidenced by the letter from Mr. Nyawin Gawen to you on October 6, 2006.

Please clarify to us as soon as possible regarding your intentions for the native customary lands and longhouse of Rumah Nyawin, prior to their eviction deadline of 4 November 2006.

Sincerely,

Bumi equity hit NEP target 10 years ago

A university research paper has found that the 30 percent bumiputera equity ownership as targeted under the government’s New Economic Policy had been achieved about a decade ago.
The research, done by Universiti Malaya academician Dr M Fazilah Abdul Samad, was based on a 10-year analysis of bumiputera equity ownership between 1988 and 1997 of public listed companies on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE), now called Bursa Malaysia.
It found the 30 percent bumiputera equity ownership target was reached in 1997 when it hit 33.7 percent.
